SCHOOL COUNSELING SERVICES

School Counselors design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They lead, advocate and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. They uphold the ethical and professional standards of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree, and are professionally certified individuals who help students succeed in school and plan their career. School Counselors work with students to address three domains: academic, social/emotional and the exploration and promotion of career education. Our School Counselor provides intervention when a student’s concerns make functioning in school difficult. This may involve working with teachers, parents, and/or children individually, in small groups and/or in classrooms. If individual counseling and/or small group counseling is warranted, the School Counselor must have parent consent. The necessary forms will be sent home. Meeting with the School Counselor is not a substitute for long-term therapeutic counseling and is not intended to serve as a replacement when a need for mental health counseling arises.

When a student experiences emotional difficulty, it may affect their general daily functioning. For students, this is often evident in academics. Frequently school-related problems may be symptomatic of those troubles. School-based mental health professionals (School Counselor, School Social Worker, School Psychologist & Licensed Mental Health Professional) can assist families connect to community mental health resources and provide another layer of support when parents give consent through the school’s Mental Health team.  Please contact Ms. Nicol, School Counselor for more mental health information at [email protected]
