Red Ribbon Week

October 22 – October 26, 2018

WHAT IS RED RIBBON WEEK?
An ideal way for people and communities to take a visible stand against drugs and to show their personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the red ribbon.

WHY?
The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered Kiki Camarena, a DEA agent, in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of wearing and displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The purpose of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment toward the creation of a DRUG-FREE AMERICA.

Red Ribbon Week Theme of the Days:

Monday (Oct. 22, 2018) - “RED”-Y to be Drug Free - Wear Something Red Day to support being drug free.

Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2018) – “I Mustache You” Not To Do Drugs - Wear a mustache to school to show your Drug Free Spirit.

Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2018)
“HATS Off To being Drug Free” - Wear a silly hat to school or add an anti-drug message to a hat you already have to show your Red Ribbon Week spirit.

Thursday (Oct. 25, 2018)
“STAY IN THE GAME” - Bring in your favorite game to play and share with friends.

Friday (Oct. 26, 2018)
- “Stomp out Drugs” - During morning announcements we all stomp for 30 seconds to “stomp out” drugs before Storybook Parade begins.

Image result for costume clipart for kidsOne of the greatest traditions at Pelican Elementary School is the annual Storybook Parade. Students p
arade through each classroom showing off their costume of a favorite storybook character while collecting candy along the way. This year the Storybook Parade will be held on Friday, October 26. Please send your child into school wearing a costume; students will need a change of clothes for after the parade. That afternoon we will enjoy a classroom celebration with yummy treats. If you are able to contribute it would be very much appreciated. Look for a donation list to go home soon.

Although Halloween is on Wednesday, October 31, students are NOT permitted to wear costumes on this day. Save those costumes for trick-or-treat that evening.

Report Cards will go home on Tuesday, October 23. Please sign and return the white envelope. First Quarter STAR scores and AR reports can also be found with your child's report card.

October 2018

October 1 - 5 is Bullying Prevention Week. It's a time when communities can unite nationwide to raise awareness of bullying prevention through events, activities, outreach, and education. Bullying directly affects a student's ability to learn. Students who are bullied find it difficult to concentrate, show a decline in grades, and lose self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth. Pelican Elementary School will join with the rest of the nation in support of National Bullying Prevention Month by participating in the following activities...

Monday, October 1 - Bully Free Zone - wear blue as a sign of peace and safety
Tuesday, October 2 - Celebrate Diversity - wear orange to celebrate diversity
Wednesday, October 3 - We will make an anti-bullying poster
Thursday, October 4 - Give Someone a Compliment Day - words motivate, inspire, express emotions, give confidence, and bring joy. We will write a note of appreciation to a staff member who doesn't normally receive appreciation.
Friday, October 5 - What is Cyberbullying? We'll watch a message from Kid President.

Please take a minute to go through your child's binder and backpack to read through all of the notices and classroom papers that have been sent home. You will find a pink paper explaining School Messenger, a new form of communication between the school district and parents.

September 2018
A great big THANK YOU to the families who were able to attend Curriculum Night. It was so nice to see you and share what's happening in third grade and our classroom.

Your child has been so busy learning and growing. In Reading and Language Arts we've been working on a number of skills and strategies such as compare and contrast, cause and effect, main idea and details, character traits, and sequence of events. We've taken a look at a variety myths, fables, and folk tales and the elements of fiction stories. We're now looking at non-fiction passages and how authors organize information and why they use text features such as photographs, illustrations, charts, graphs, tables, captions, and maps.

Image result for parts of a plant clipart

In Science, we've learned about parts of plants and their functions, and have moved on to classifying animals according to their characteristics. Everyone enjoyed researching their chosen animal.

In Math, we've completed Geometry and 2-D Figures, Parts of a Whole/Fractions and Fractions on a Number Line and we will begin Equivalent Fractions. You can help your child at home by pointing out examples. For example, if your family eats 4 out of 8 slices of pizza you've eaten half of the pizza: 4/8 = 1/2.

September 17 was U.S. Constitution Day. We spent the week learning about the Founding Fathers, the Sons of Liberty, and the purpose and need for government. Ask your child about the Preamble and Constitution songs they've listened to.

August 2018
We've had a great first month of school. During our first week back we enjoyed lots of "getting to know you" and team-building activities. It was fun to learn so many interesting facts about our classmates. Now that we're all settled into our new classroom and routines we're fully into our academics. We are fortunate to have additional support in our classroom each day. I'm sure your child has mentioned Mr. Ale, Ms. Dina, and Ms. Juarez. They help with centers and small groups each day.
