Pelican Elementary is committed to student
learning in a child-centered environment with an emphasis on positive
reinforcement. The school features a strong academic focus, stressing
problem-solving for lifelong learning. The curriculum is driven by the Sunshine
State Standards and the goals outlined in our Academic School
Improvement Plan as determined each fall by our SAC
committee.
A primary focus of the school is student
success in reading. Students enjoy learning through such programs as
Accelerated Reader, Writing Road to Reading, Literature Classics, as well
as the traditional reading program. The reading emphasis begins in
kindergarten with a variety of language development activities and
continues through all grades as a strong foundation and a love for reading
is established.
Writing Road to Reading uses a
multi-sensory approach to teaching explicit phonics in grades K-2.
Students learn 70 phonograms then apply them in spelling and
reading. They also learn the "rules" of the English
language. Success in WRTR has a direct, positive influence on
a student's reading ability.
A second focus is math, where all students
learn facts and divergent thinking. Often students can be seen
solving complex problems, developing projects, working cooperatively and
using extensive technology resources.
Another important focus is writing.
Pelican has implemented a comprehensive program, beginning in
kindergarten, with defined writing skill expectations for each grade
level. Students learn the writing process as they develop their
narrative and expository writings. Fifth grade also begins to learn
persuasive writing. |
