![]() Students at Pelican Elementary are encouraged to be involved in extra-curricular activities. We believe student participation in outside activities, such as musical, artistic, sports related, social/character building or religious increases the child's knowledge base and self-esteem when balanced with school work. Pelican is a host meeting location for various independently sponsored activity groups. In addition, we sponsor fourth and fifth grade extra-curricular programs during school hours.
Additional Science Opportunities Science at Pelican Elementary is an additional 'specials' class for all students. It is designed to better prepare our students for the 5th grade FCAT Science test. Students are taught all areas of Science, plus they receive an extra benefit because our science specialist, Mrs. Carol Stewart, is a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador: http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/ambassador/profiles/Carol_Stewart.htm Our students have participated in the 'Embrace Space--Space Day' poster event that allowed our students to have their signatures sent on a Space Shuttle Mission. It was the STS-117 mission that flew in June 2007. Students also have the enrichment opportunity to view through telescopes on selected nights during the year. We observe the Moon and any planets that are visible as well as other night sky objects like star clusters and nebulae. 'Science Snacks' in our weekly Pelican Press also offer many extras for exploring great NASA and other excellent sites for students and parents to enrich their children's learning about Science. Parents and students also have the opportunity to see, first hand, lunar soil samples provided by NASA through The Kennedy Space Center during a program offered because of Mrs. Stewart's lunar soil sample certification through The Kennedy Space Center.
ODYSSEY OF THE MIND Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division.
We, at Pelican, have several teams, coached by interested teachers and parents. The team members range in age from third grade to fifth grade. Drama Club Drama club is open to any 5th grader. Opportunities abound in many areas including:
Safety Patrol Students in fifth grade have an opportunity to participate in Pelican's Safety Patrol Program. Participation is based on teacher nominations of students who exhibit superior citizenship and responsibility. Safety patrol duties include monitoring safe passage through the hallways, on the bus ramp, and at parent pick-up. Safety patrols are supervised by designated teachers. WPEN Morning News
Every morning Pelican Elementary produces a live news show. WPEN begins with announcements from our student newscaster and Mrs. Robinson, our assistant principal. Students from every classroom take turns saying the pledge and, as our "chef du jour", reading the lunch menu. Fifth grade students work the cameras, the audio/video board and organize any special guests, such as our Accelerated Reader achievers who are presented with their certificates and buttons on the air. Students receive an introduction to communications and some even plan to pursue it as a career! The Pelican Pursuit The annual run on the streets around Pelican Elementary, The Pelican Pursuit, will be held in April. Fourth and fifth graders will be running one mile and first, second and third graders will be running a half mile. This run is important since their time will be their score for the Presidential Physical Fitness test. The runs will begin about 8:20 a.m. with fifth graders and end about 10:30 a.m. We welcome parent participation, so please plan to run with your child or come cheer them on at the finish line. More information will go home as we get closer to the date. The Pelican Elementary Chorus The music classes at Pelican Elementary offer a little bit of everything. We are equipped with Orff instruments and a full selection of rhythm instruments. The fourth and fifth graders play recorder as well as the other instruments. Of course, we sing from day one! Creative movement, rhythmic comprehension, and a variety of listening experiences are also a part of what is taught in music class on a regular basis. The Pelican Elementary Chorus has been something in which all look forward to participating. Many students watch from kindergarten on up and can't wait for their chance to perform in our group. From the Holiday Show to the Spring Performance, we have a great time learning about using our voices and choreographing a show. We rehearse after school hours and must be dedicated to the group. We have had as many as 80 students participating at one time. As you can imagine, music at Pelican is great fun and very educational! The Lee County Elementary Honor Choir The Pelican Elementary Chorus has been something in which all look forward to participating. In late January, 5th grade students are given a special opportunity. From those auditions, five students will be chosen who will represent Pelican Elementary School in the 2009 Lee County Elementary Honor Choir. This is a very unique and special opportunity for our students to display their talents to the community. The Pride Jump Rope Teams Pelican's jump rope team practices and performs for the community to help in bringing about awareness for the National Heart Association. The students have a great time and get exercise in the process. Field Trips Although each grade level has special activities, there are some exciting field trips that Pelican Elementary hopes will provide both fun and educational opportunities for students.
In addition, each fifth grade Pelican Student has the opportunity to earn a trip to Sun Splash.
